12th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), Vancouver, Canada, June 18-21, 2014
Verges, C.

The 12th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) opened in Vancouver, Canada, with an enthusiastic presidential symposium in which speakers conveyed the idea that, after decades of research, stem cell therapy is ready to firmly translate into the clinic and access the general public. Different speakers stressed the idea that standard guidelines and current GMP (cGMP) and the collaboration of government, academia and industry are needed to make this possible. Speakers spoke about the difficulties of this research field, including the absence of regulatory guidelines, the elevated manufacturing cost, the difficult path to clinical studies and IP limitations. A big part of the presentations showed in vitro and in vivo results for reprogramming and differentiation of stem cells, and some showed results in patients or from studies close to clinical phases.
